Clinton County Historical Association to produce suffrage-themed series of events

The Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) received a special grant of $ 15,000 from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership (CVNHP) of the Lake Champlain Basin Program to support a series of regional events this summer called The Champlain Valley Suffrage Centennial Auto Tour.

The Champlain Valley Centennial of Suffrage Car Tour will take place on successive weekends from July 31 to August 21, 2021 to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The tour will pay tribute to the effective strategies that suffragists employed locally and nationally – rallies, pageants, parades, speeches and car tours. Vintage automobiles and costumed participants will create the atmosphere of the Suffrous Movement era. Planned events include, but are not limited to: (1) re-enactment of speeches by Susan B. Anthony; (2) re-enactments of “Broom Brigades” military-style exercises; (3) the re-enactment of the 1924 “Forward into Light†competition organized by the leader of the National Woman’s Party, Alice Paul, in honor of the martyr of the suffrage Inez Milholland; (4) discussion of intersectionality and racism in the women’s suffrage movement and highlighting suffragists of color; (5) a cavalcade of cars and costumed reenactments crossing the Champlain Bridge from Addison, VT to Crown Point, NY; (6) suffrage singing concert by Peggy Lynn and Dan Duggan.

Various regional organizations will help with the presentation of the history and activities at each location. In addition to CCHA, the following sites and municipalities organize car touring events: North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association in Ausable Chasm; the towns of Lewis and Elizabethtown; Meadowmount School of Music; Maritime Museum of Lake Champlain in Vergennes, Vergennes; Chimney Point State Historic Site in Addison, VT; and the Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls. “We are grateful to the Lake Champlain Basin Program for CVNHP funds to help with our ambitious multi-day, multi-event celebration spanning two states, four counties, and many historic and cultural institutions, â€said Tisha Dolton, Touring Committee Chair. “It may be a year after our initial plans, but our centennial suffrage celebrations will be worth the wait.”
