Details released for August celebration to mark city’s anniversary

It was August 27, 1997 when the people of Marco Island went to the polls and voted to incorporate, and Marco Island officially became a city.

Municipal authorities are planning a week of activities to mark the 25th anniversary.

Scavenger hunt and day at the beach, August 22

It starts at 8 a.m., with a beach cleanup hosted by the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) in South Beach.

At 10:30 a.m., residents will lead a scavenger hunt at the Marco Island Historical Museum. Several local organizations are participating, allowing residents to find clues and prizes throughout the city.

Additionally, during the day, the Marco Island Library will host a scavenger hunt for young children not in school.

Sports Day, August 23

The Marco YMCA will be hosting open swimming and fitness classes for residents of Marco Island.

The Marco Island Chamber of Commerce and Blue Zones will host a 25-minute (2.5-mile) evening walk through Hideaway, and schools will have kids walk 25 minutes during gym class to mark the 25th anniversary.

Additionally, city staff will face off in a kickball match at Winterberry Park.

Art Day – “Yesterday and Now”, August 24

Art will be displayed in schools, elementary school children will participate in a coloring contest, the Marco Island Center for the Arts will hold a wine event, and City Hall will host an Art @ City Hall open house.

“History Day” and Employee Appreciation, August 25

Schools will have assemblies with historical actors organized by the Marco Island Historical Society. There will be a history program in the library and a historical exhibit in the museum lobby.

Events will focus on the history of Marco Island and the beginning of the town.

City staff will be honored at a luncheon in Mackle Park, recognizing employees who have worked for the city for 25 years.

‘City Government Day’ and an evening concert, August 26

From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., vehicles and equipment from the municipal police, firefighters, public works and utilities will be on display for children. There will be a meeting between the inhabitants to meet the members of the municipal council.

From 7 to 9 p.m., a free concert by “The Rockefeller” will take place at Marco Lutheran Church. Tickets will be available before the concert.

City of Marco Island 25th Anniversary Prom, August 27

The week will be capped off with a ball for adults from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Marco Island Hilton. Tickets will be sold for this event.

The “ball” will have a 1990s theme to recognize that Marco Island became a city in 1997. Throughout the week, businesses that have been operating on Marco Island for 25 years or more will be recognized.

Finally, #Marco25 will be featured on billboards and social media to highlight and tag each festive event.

The 25th Anniversary Celebration Committee includes representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, Marco Island Historical Museum, Marco Island Civic Association (MICA), Marco Island Center for the Arts, Marco YMCA, Marco Island Academy , from Marco Island Charter Middle School. , Tommie Barfield Elementary, Collier County Public Library on Marco Island, the Marco Island Historical Society, and city staff.
