Ecclesbourne Valley Railway to welcome the Deltic locomotive in 2022

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has announced that Class 55 Deltic, No 55019 ‘Royal Highland Fusilier’ will visit them in 2022.

Courtesy of the Deltic Preservation Society, 55019 is expected to enter service on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway on April 22, 2022, which will be the Railroad’s Spring Diesel Gala, which runs from April 22 to 24, 2022.

The locomotive will then run on other selected dates until early summer.

The 55019 is one of the Class 55 Deltics that was introduced to carry mainline express trains in the 1960s.

Deltics were commonplace on the East Coast Mainline until the late 1970s, but the 55019 was the first in its class to operate a passenger train in preservation in 1982. Since then, it has been a A popular locomotive on heritage railways, it has also been on the main line, but 55019 has not been on the main line since the mid-2000s.

More details on the 55019 visit will be shared when confirmed.

Leigh Gration, railway business manager, commented: “We are delighted to be working with the Deltic Preservation Society to operate 55,019 passenger trains between Wirksworth and Duffield in 2022. The visit of such a prestigious locomotive builds on our reputation for offering a diverse selection of traction at our Diesel galas. We hope that next year’s star attraction will be greatly appreciated by all of our visitors.

The President of the Deltic Preservation Society, Murray Brown, added: “We were eager to visit this charming heritage railway that encourages historic diesel traction. Our members are delighted that one of our legendary Deltics is making a very first visit to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. If you’ve never seen or heard one of these magnificent locomotives in action, you’re in for a treat. British railway engineering at its best!
