The Caseville Historical Society holds a meeting

The members of the Caseville Historical Society held their monthly meeting on Thursday, December 16, 2021 starting at 10 a.m. There were 11 members present.

President Janet Ekel opened the meeting with an oath of allegiance. She welcomed all participants. President Ekel requested that the minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer’s report be presented. Both were presented, discussed and approved by the group. Treasurer Sherry Hoelzle noted that two generous donations have recently been made. A donation was received from JoAnne and James Christner and another from Wayne and Janet Krentz in memory of Delores Hartman.



President Ekel said five members of Caseville attended the Huron County Historical Society Christmas luncheon held at the Bad Ax Senior Center on December 4. Ekel said the group has collected several donations for the Caseville food bank that will be given to the Methodist Church where supplies are collected for people facing emergencies. Ekel said the museum’s revised winter hours appear to be working well. The museum’s opening hours for the months of December, January, February and March will be noon to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

President Ekel has said the Goodnight Moon display is expected to be taken down from January. She said several replacements had been suggested. They included: a women’s clothing store, canning / preserving food, something to do with Caseville schools or an exhibition centered on “Musicâ€. During the discussion, Dale Melson said he had a large collection of Civil War artifacts and would volunteer to create an exhibit focused on Michigan during the Civil War. The group voted and approved a new Michigan-centric display during the Civil War. Work on the new display will begin shortly after the start of the new year.

Ekel reviewed the upcoming programs offered by the Michigan Historical Society (HSM). She said the history skills workshops are currently offered by remote access only and are available on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Members pay $ 49.00 per workshop. Upcoming topics include: January 7 Faded Photos: How to Identify and Archive Historical Photographs; January the 21st Albums, diaries and souvenirs. . . Oh my! Ekel said History Hounds Zoom videos will be available as follows: Wednesday, December 22 at 7:00 p.m. – Little house in the great woods: the life of Laura Engels Wilder; Tuesday January 4, 2022 at noon – The regiment of the black hat: the 24e Michigan Iron Brigade; Wednesday January 12 at 7:00 p.m. – From Cheese to Politics: The Story of Governor Fred Warner; Tuesday January 18 at noon – Strategic Air Command: Kinchloe Air Base and B-52 crash. History Hounds videos are also remotely accessible only until further notice. Pre-registration is required at www.hsmichigan.org. Ekel said the Michigan History Alliance workshops are also all remote and a schedule can be found at www.hsmichigan.org. She said the Michiganders on the Road Tours were not yet scheduled for 2022.

The Membership Committee had no new members to report.

Reporting to the Events Committee, President Ekel has requested volunteers to act as the Presidents of the events scheduled for 2022. The events are scheduled and the Presidents have volunteered as follows. Shanty Days Game-O-Rama on February 12 will be chaired by Joyce Miller, Ice Cream Social on May 29 will be chaired by Janet Ekel, Ladies’ Garden Luncheon on June 15 will be chaired by Audrey Jesmore. The Cheeseburger Museum from August 12 to 21st still needs a president. The Classic Car and Tractor show on September 17 will be chaired by Dave Vizard. The fall party and auction on November 6 will be chaired by Harold and Sherry Hoelzle.

President Ekel said the museum had not had any visitors over the past month. A recent donation of items was made by Janet M. Krantz.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 20. 2022 from 10:00 am All meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. Meetings are a great way to participate in community events, meet your neighbors, preserve Caseville’s past, and have fun.
