WELLSVILLE – On October 13, the Wellsville Historical Society transferred ownership of Ascension Church, a historic part of the village in need of rehabilitation, to the new Wellsville Community Foundation.

The church dates back to 1870, when the town of Wellsville had an imposing railroad presence. It has not been used as a place of worship for almost five decades and has not been open to the public for almost as long.

In the 1980s, a small group of concerned residents, including a few former parishioners, formed “Friends of the Ascension Church” to take possession and save the church from falling into utter disrepair. A few years ago, the group transferred ownership to the Historical Society.

The church needs major upgrades, including heating and plumbing. Plans are underway to secure funding. The Foundation’s vision is for the church to be used as a viable and vibrant community space for accessible cultural activities.

Those wishing to help with the physical needs of this project, please contact the foundation through their website or send donations to the Wellsville Community Foundation at PO Box 342. Donations are also welcome online at www.wellsvillecommunitiyfoundation.org.

The Wellsville Community Foundation is a 501C3 organization.
