What do you know about maritime security? Benzie’s landmark series aims for help

BENZONIA — Railroad and car ferry enthusiast Andy Bolander will be presenting on maritime safety at the upcoming Benzonia Academy lecture series.

The presentation is scheduled for 4 p.m. on March 10 on Zoom. A link to the presentation is available at benziemuseum.org.

The online lecture will focus on images from the collection of the Benzie Area Historical Society. In his presentation, Bolander will share a look at Benzie County lighthouses, lifesaving stations, and United States Coast Guard activities that kept people and property safe.

Bolander is a volunteer and chief researcher for the Benzie Area Historical Society. He proclaims himself to be “a nerd for all things Ann Arbor Railroad”.

Beginning in April, talks will be offered at Mills Community House, virtually and recorded for later viewing.

Benzonia Academy was established in 1863 by the founders of the community to provide everyone, regardless of race or gender, the opportunity to receive a liberal education.

The Benzie Area Historical Society seeks to continue the tradition of the community’s founders by offering this free online lecture series on the second Thursday of each month.

Topics are varied and cover local, state, national and international history.
